USGA announces a big deal

The USGA announced yesterday that it had signed its first corporate sponsorship with an automaker. The multi-year deal makes Lexus the official car of the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Amateur.

It's the first auto partnership in the USGA's 112 year history. I would say it's about time.

In the last couple of years, the USGA really stepped up its sponsorship efforts, seeking bigger and better deals similar to the ones already in place for the PGA TOUR as well as the other, international associations. It's a move that gives the USGA more money to promote its product and grow the fan and player base of the game of golf.

In a release from the USGA regarding the Lexus sponsorship, USGA President Walter Driver had this to say: “The obvious fit is that the USGA will now be able to offer Lexus vehicles and provide the players with an enhanced experience at selected USGA national championships while Lexus gets to showcase its product line at the very top events in golf—the USGA national championships. We are looking at all of the possibilities and the things we can do together for the benefit of golf.”

It's win-win for the USGA and Lexus and you can believe that there will be more and more companies lining up to create exclusive deals in future.

'New' Northwest Hot Spot

When you think about retirement, what are some of the locations that come to mind? Palm Springs, Florida, Phoenix? What about the quiet, sleepy town of Bandon, Oregon. According to upcoming list compiled by ABC's Today Show, Bandon ranks in the top five for retirement hot spots.

According to a news release and story in the Bandon Western World, the show contacted the town's Chamber of Commerce while researching for the upcoming show that will unveil the list.

The list also includes Loveland, Colorado; Lake Placid, New York; Beaufort, South Carolina; and a fishing village in Puerto Rico.

If Bandon's good enough to retire to, then it's definitely worthy of a nice vacation. If you've never been to Bandon, now's the perfect time to book your trip and maybe (just maybe) play a couple of rounds at three of the top courses in the United States. We can even make a few recommendations of sites to see away from the resort.

Golf's New Era

Is it just me or does the PGA's 'New Era' look a lot like its previous years?

We had Vijay Singh come out of the gate in the year's first event and win (we've seen that before); then Paul Goydos gets his first win in over a decade at the Sony Open; now, at the Bob Hope, we've got another first time TOUR winner. It's the same unpredicatable results with a new points system.

Despite having a host of well known players take the lead throughout the tournament - guys like Justin Rose, Lucas Glover and Scott Verplank - it was little known Charley Hoffman who made up four strokes and snatched a playoff win over John Rollins. It's finishes like this one that makes the PGA TOUR interesting to watch, not the new FedEx Cup standings.

Will things change once all the big dogs commit to playing every week and FedEx Cup points get to be harder to come by? Maybe. Unfortunately, we won't know that for another six months.

Top Pick: Sunriver Resort

Most people would agree that, when it comes to golf in the Northwest, the three courses at Sunriver Resort should be at the top of anyone's list. Even though it may seem like an easy pick for a course feature, but there's much more than golf to talk about.

In addition to the great golf, the resort is a paradise for families looking for a vacation. There's swimming for the kids (as well as a great kids camp), plenty of activities for mom and dad to do together and mile upon mile of hiking and bike riding trails.

As for lodging at Sunriver, there's almost as many choices as there are things to do. Standard guest rooms, suites, deluxe suites and houses and condos that can accomodate an entire family. And, in our packages, we have access to the best prices on all of them.

Consider this something of a teaser when thinking about a trip to Central Oregon this year. If you're interested in more information about Crosswater, The Meadows or The Woodlands, visit our Sunriver Page @ OregonGolfAdventures.com.
